An Attorney’s Guide to Building a Healthy Mindset

For those in the legal field, working late nights and feeling the pressure to deliver can easily become the norm. With so much on their plate, the workday can oftentimes feel overwhelming and stressful. So how do you flip the switch? How do you make each challenge feel exciting instead of dreadful? It starts with creating a healthy mindset.

With the right mindset, anything is possible. The potential for new opportunities will start to open up, and you’ll feel prepared to take them on with confidence and ease. Now, changing your mindset is no easy task; that’s why we’ve put together a list of tips to help you create a healthy mindset.

1. Exercise
Studies have shown that routine exercise can have a major impact on your mental health. Whether running, biking, or just taking daily walks at lunch, incorporating exercise into your routine will help you keep a clear mind so you can stay positive and productive during your workday.

2. Get Creative
Whether it’s painting, playing an instrument or simply listening to your favorite musician, when you stimulate your mind creatively, you can unlock new pathways in your brain that allow you to look at situations from a different perspective. So if you feel like you’ve hit a mental roadblock, get creative and see what new solutions open up.

3. Step Outside of Your Comfort Zone
While many try to avoid this at all costs, stepping outside of your comfort zone can actually be great for your mindset. That’s because when doing so, you train your mind to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. This helps create a strong mental outlook where you realize you are more resilient than you thought you were, which allows you to reach new heights both personally and professionally.

4. Plan for Setbacks
No matter who you are, setbacks in life and in work are inevitable; however, that doesn’t make them any less trying when they do happen. Here’s a trick to help you keep a healthy mindset for when those setbacks do occur: plan for them. Think through what could go wrong and anticipate an action plan for how to overcome those challenges. That way, when something does go awry, your mindset will be prepared for whatever happens next.

5. Positive Affirmations
How you speak to yourself really does make an impact on your mindset. That’s where positive affirmations come in. If you tell yourself things like, “I can do this” or “I am strong and worthy of success,” you’ll actually start believing it and then being it! On the other hand, if you speak to yourself in a negative way, that negativity will fester and only cause harm to your mental health. Instead, we recommend talking to yourself like you’re talking to your best friend. Start each morning off by giving yourself a positive affirmation, and you’ll begin to see a change for the better in your mindset.

6. Take Time Off to Reset
While this can be difficult for busy attorneys to do, taking time off from work every once in a while can do wonders for your mental health. Whether it’s an extended weekend trip or simply carving out time to be with family and friends after work, these types of excursions can be the perfect solution to reset your mind, making you feel recharged and ready to hit the ground running.

These are just some tools attorneys and legal teams can use to help build a healthy mindset.
