You’re probably familiar with the phrase, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” For my son, Brandon, this phrase hits close to home.
For those who don’t know, motocross racing is his passion. Even with a full-time job as a Financial Advisor at Northwestern Mutual, he’s loved to race in his spare time ever since he was four years old. Unfortunately, that came to a stop back in June when he dislocated his shoulder.
Because of his injury, he had to spend seven weeks off his bike and three months in physical therapy. It was a trying time for him; however, he remained optimistic that he was going to be able to race again. As a motocross racer, he’s used to injuries, so the physical pain was manageable; it was silencing the negative thoughts that was more difficult.
Nonetheless, he kept a positive attitude and put all his energy into recovery. With a race scheduled for Labor Day weekend, he spent all his spare time either in physical therapy or at the chiropractor. Then, three weeks before the September race, he was approved to get back on his bike.
Motivated to do his very best, he would get on the bike three days a week and then do cardio at the gym twice a week on top of that. It was challenging, yet he wanted to ensure that he did everything possible to be successful so that he could never look back and be disappointed in the race results.
On Labor Day weekend, Brandon had his first race back after his injury, and that race led him to what has been the highlight of his racing career: accomplishing his life-long goal of qualifying for a pro motocross national race!
As his mom, I am so proud of all that he’s accomplished both on and off the racetrack. As he’s gone through this recovery process, it’s reminded me just how important optimistic and positive thinking can be – whether you’re on a motorcycle or in the courtroom.
The past year and a half has been full of ups and downs for those in the legal community. Whether it’s learning new technologies for virtual depositions, working from home, having restrictions be lifted and changed, we’ve all had our fair share of setbacks. Yet, while it hasn’t always been easy, it’s been so inspiring to see so many clients show optimism and positivity in the face of challenging times. I truly believe that these kinds of setbacks can make you stronger.
As we enter the fourth quarter of 2021, I hope you’re able to enjoy the fruits of your labor and experience all the things that bring you joy, just like Brandon!
